A lavish musical programme had been arranged for the occasion: Gewandhaus organist Michael Schönheit, contralto Annette Markert and the Gewandhaus choir performed Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Three Spiritual Songs (MWV B 33), pianist Laetitia Hahn played Mendelssohn’s Rondo capriccioso in E major, Op. 14 (MWV U 67), Markus Lüpertz and his band thrilled the audience with jazz improvisations, and Maestro Kurt Masur and the Gewandhaus Orchestra brought the festival concert to a close with Schumann’s Symphony No. 2. in C major, Op. 61.
Leipzig’s trade fair catering company fairgourmet treated guests at the subsequent dinner in the concert hall’s Mendelssohn Room to an unforgettable menu by Michelin star-winning chef Tim Raue (centre), who had made a special trip from Berlin to join his Leipzig colleagues in making sure the evening was a success.
The proceeds from the event will benefit the Mendelssohn House museum extension.
