Catalogue of Mendelssohn’s Musical Works (MWV)

On the occasion of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's 200th birthday a Symbol externer Link complete catalogue of the composer's works was published.
During the international congress "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - Kompositorisches Werk und künstlerisches Wirken" (Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - His work as a composer and artist) and the "Mendelssohn Festival 2009" Ralf Wehner's Catalogue of Mendelssohn's Musical Works (MWV) was presented on 26 August at the Mendelssohn House in Leipzig. Dr Ralf Wehner is in charge of the catalogue of Mendelssohn's works at Saxony's Academy of Sciences.
Until today, one could only guess how comprehensive Mendelssohn's work is. The commonly known works have been attributed numbers (originally up to op 72, continued up to op 121 after his death). However, most of the about 750 compositions remained unpublished until the 1960s. Since then, the music world has welcomed the publication of a number of his early works in the catalogue of Mendelssohn's works.

However, so far a comprehensive list of his works has not been available. In the Mendelssohn anniversary year 2009, this gap has been closed by the publication of the Thematic-Systematic Catalogue of the Musical Works of Mendelssohn. The MWV comprises 26 groups of works. In addition, there is a description of all known composite manuscripts and composite prints. In the appendix you can find information on works whose authenticity is not certain and on Mendelssohn's adaptions and editions of the works of others.

Wehner's work is based on extensive research. Over a period of several years he studied and evaluated material and information in more than 1,500 libraries worldwide, about 15,000 auction catalogues and about 12,000 letters. He refers to 2,500 sources on unknown works and varieties of works. Thus, the catalogue becomes a rich source of information for scientists, musicians and music lovers. The MWV will have a lasting effect on the way we view the composer.
