During a formal ceremony on the occasion of the conductor's 80th birthday and in the presence of Kofi Annan Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung presented the
Mendelssohn-Award (PDF, 721 kB) to Kurt Masur. From his earliest youth, he has rendered outstanding services to the music and work of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He is also the person to record a number of Mendelssohn's works for the first time.
